Swipe Functionality for Chip-Enabled Cards
Overview
Our payment devices are designed to follow EMV (chip card) security protocols. For chip-enabled cards, the default and required methods of payment are tap or dip.
How Swipe Works:
- Primary Methods: Tap (contactless) or dip (chip insert).
- Swipe Restriction: The swipe function will not be available unless three consecutive attempts to tap or dip have failed.
- Fallback Activation: Only after these failed attempts does the device enable swipe as a fallback method.
Important Notes:
- Attempting to swipe a chip-enabled card before fallback is triggered will cause the device to lock and display two corner lights for approximately 60 seconds before it resets.
- This is expected behavior, not a malfunction.
- Merchants should guide customers to use tap or dip first.
- The device’s design may display the swipe icon prominently, but chip technology always takes priority.
Best Practice:
Always instruct cardholders to tap or dip first. If these methods fail after three attempts, the device will then permit a swipe transaction.
